Despite the recession, the UK currently has several areas of employment in which there are skills shortages. Where these are particularly severe – and there just aren't enough skilled workers to fill the roles – they are listed by the UK government as being government-approved for sponsorship of workers from abroad, as full-time jobs, rather than summer jobs in the UK on short visas. This means that for the jobs appearing on this list, there are far more jobs than people to fill them – so for anyone considering what to study at university, or what kind of retraining might make sense for a career change, these jobs should definitely be on the radar.

Training to be a Teacher

Within teaching, which has served as a good area for people wishing to make career changes in the past few years, only maths and science teachers are currently being sought from countries outside the UK. However, this does not mean jobs are not available in other subjects, but science teachers have become so valuable that UK residents are now offered a tax-free bursary to the amount of £9,000 (in 2010) if they train to teach in any of the following subjects: physics, chemistry, engineering, design and technology, ICT, manufacturing, mathematics, and construction.

The UK government also offer a tax-free bursary payment of £6,000 for those training to teach biology, combined/general science, music, religious education, English, geography and modern languages. Retraining as a teacher is less expensive than many other options, as many people find they are eligible for student loans, maintenance grants and "golden hellos" of £2,500–£5,000 on taking up their first teaching job.
