The world nurse staffing crisis has no end in sight. Reporting in the July/August 2009 issue of Health Affairs Magazine, Dr. Peter Buerhaus and coauthors found that despite the current easing of the nursing shortage due to the recession, the American nursing shortage is projected to grow to 260,000 registered nurses by 2025. A shortage of this magnitude would be twice as large as any nursing shortage experienced in this country since the mid-1960s, according to the article written by Dr. Buerhaus and his research team, "The Recent Surge in Nurse Employment: Causes and Implications."

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing expects the shortage to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows. According to a report released by the American Health Care Association in July 2008, more than 19,400 RN vacancies exist in long-term care settings. Add these vacancies to the American Hospital Association's reported 116,000 open positions back in July 2007 and the total RN vacancies in the U.S. total more than 135,000. Nursing is now being referred to as the “reluctant profession.” The Nursing Shortage Fact Sheet, updated in September 2009 and available from the AACN, claims that almost half a million licensed registered nurses are no longer working as nurses. Turnover for first year nurses is 35 percent, posing a real threat to the quality of health care in America. Why is it so difficult to retain them once they’ve been effectively educated?
