National Trust Scotland Vacancies

Visitors often ask, 'What is the difference between the National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland?' The simplistic answer is that the NTS has buildings with roofs on and pretty things inside but HS properties are ruins being repaired and kept safe for visitors to see.

Enquiry by Sir George Reid

The same question is being considered during a reviewn investigation commissioned by the NTS board which is facing severe and persistent financial problems. With a team of ten independent specialists who are highly and broadly qualified in heritage related fields, Sir George Reid, the recently retired Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, have been given freedom to investigate every crevice of NTS management in an effort to redress the situation.

Financial Problems Bring Changes in the NTS

In recent years the major change has been at NTS head office. After decades of dithering, significant staff cuts have been made. A much harder bullet to bite was the scaling down of public 'policy meetings', often numbering over a hundred people, all potential big donors and all wanting their say. It made change virtually impossible, especially as the 1935 Act of Parliament which enshrined the charity's status gave twenty eight different bodies the right to send a representative, with five subsequent Acts adding more red tape.
