In early 1968, Judy Agnew was the 47 year-old wife of Maryland’s Governor. She was terrified at being transformed from a cheerful home body who "majored in marriage" into the wife of a vice-presidential candidate. During her first press conference in the Governor's mansion, she said "I'm not the speechmaker of the family, I'm the homemaker and mother". She recalled for reporters: ''Ted got into politics through the P.T.A.”. When journalists asked her how she felt about becoming Second Lady of the U.S., she stated: "I think it would be very nice”.

In late 1968, her husband, Spiro Theodore “Ted” Agnew, then age 50, became Vice President and the self-appointed spokesman for the silent majority. He’d turnED a habit into a career of hammering all comers, that is, any critics of Richard Milhous Nixon’s Presidency, until by 1972, Agnew’s alliterative license with the English language [“Spiro-speak”] had ultimately led Nixon’s lackeys to label him a liability.
