In order to be licensed as a Kentucky Registered Nurse, individuals who have never earned an accredited nursing degree must, as a first step, complete a state-approved RN KY program.

Every state is obligated to approve and regulate accredited, academic prelicensure registered nurse (RN) training programs. In Kentucky, the two principal paths to being eligible to sit for the licensing examination are an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The Kentucky Board of Nursing approves those state-accredited Kentucky RN programs (both ADN and BSN) found throughout the state.

RN KY Licensing Rules

For first-time nursing students, the following requirements must be fulfilled before being allowed to work as a Kentucky Registered Nurse:

  • Complete a state-approved Kentucky RN program
  • Pass the national NCLEX-RN examination
  • Submit to a criminal history background check

Registered nurses who already hold an out-of-state license, and who are looking to transfer that license to Kentucky, should know that the state participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact – a collection of states that accept license transfers from those in member states.
