While there are many colleges in the Glasgow area, there are only three large university institutes. The colleges include Stow; Cardonald; and the Glasgow Metropolitan. These colleges are great for people who want to learn hands-on subjects not taught at university, or as a way to get higher grades in order to get a place on a university course. For example, many courses in British universities accept students who have achieved a two-year HND (Higher National Diploma) into the second or third year of a four year university course.

Glasgow University

Glasgow University was founded in 1451, making it the fourth oldest university in the UK. It is considered the most prestigious university in Glasgow, and Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2009-2010 put it in the top 1% of universities in the world. This further education building has students from over 120 countries.

Glasgow University specialises in research, with an independent 2008 research report by RAE stating nearly 70% of their research is excellent on a world level. It is also highly respected for learning to be a doctor.
